"Jimmy was a beacon of light when he was in high school. He was always a true and loving person." - Carolyn Weathers

"I will always remember Jim's ability to perfectly and simply capture the most important things going on at the intersection of politics and scholarship. I would run into him on campus, and after he asked about whether I had been back to Lincoln, NE and praised its merits as a city, he would hand you a nugget of insight: In these days, everyone--I mean every American Studies scholar or otherwise--should be reading Marx's Capital. The comment came up because of the Starbucks cup in my hand, which he pointed to and said, Starbucks. It is the only place where labor isn't totally alienated. You see them making your cup of coffee." - Megan Black

"Jim was a great buddy to have on campus -- good listener and wonderful colleague to share ideas with. I will miss him greatly." - Yvonne Captain

"We sat in a booth with our food and our sodas, shooting the breeze. We gossiped about John Edgar Wideman and James Baldwin, told stories about our students (who, unbelievably, didn't know who Gwen Brooks was), carried on about politics. What I loved about Jim was his outrage, his eloquence, his wisdom and his humor. Once the conversation started with Jim, you never wanted it to end." - Lisa Page
