MA Student

Anna White is an American Studies MA student with a concentration in Museums and Material Culture. She calls Cleveland, Ohio home but attended Butler University in Indianapolis for her undergrad where she earned a degree in Arts Administration with an emphasis in music and a minor in history. Her research interests include looking at major moments in history and delving deeper into their legacies through the lens of arts and culture.

What made you choose GW for grad school?
I primarily chose GW because of the American Studies program and the option to have a focus in museums. When applying for grad schools, I originally was looking at more Museum Studies programs but decided along the way that I actually wanted to focus more on my research since my undergrad was concentrated in the work of arts nonprofits. GW’s program allowed me to combine my desire to develop my research and writing skills with my passion for museum work.

What or who inspired your interest in American Studies?
I have always been very involved in fine arts so those years of experience compounded with my passion for dissecting American history really led me down this path. I also had many professors in undergrad who encouraged me to follow this career path, as well as my mentor from the wonderful curatorial internship I did in my 3rd and 4th year at Butler.

What kind of music do you listen to when studying?
It depends on the kind of studying I’m doing. If I’m reading or writing, I usually listen to my playlist of film scores, but sometimes I also just need some 5SOS or Harry Styles :)

If you could live in any U.S city, which would it be and why?
A year ago I definitely would have said DC because I’ve long aspired to live and work here! Besides DC, I would love at some point in my career to be able to go back to my hometown of Cleveland, which in my opinion is a vastly underrated city.
