Ashley Brown

Ashley Brown entered the doctoral program in the fall of 2010. She completed her comprehensive examinations in the fields of twentieth century African American history, modern U.S. history, and popular culture studies, with focuses on gender and sexuality, social movements, and recreation and sport. She is also interested in critical cultural historical biography and memoir. Ashley is currently conducting research for her dissertation, tentatively entitled “Lady in Black and White: Althea Gibson, the Press, and the Discourses of Civil Rights.” She has acted as a Teaching Assistant for “Race, Gender, and the Law,” “The American City,” “Early American Cultural History,” and “The African American Experience.” She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College.
