Sophia Escobar

Sophia Escobar (she/her) is a MA student in American Studies. She received her BA  at GW in American Studies as well as Political Science, where she wrote her undergraduate thesis on DC Home Rule in the 1960s and its intersection with the national civil rights movement. She is originally from Miami, Florida but knew DC is the place for her with its rich history, heavy museum culture, and never-ending political activity. Her current research interests broadly include U.S. cultural history from the 19th and 20th centuries (pop culture, cyberculture, material culture, etc.) and its interaction with modern day politics, though much of her schooling has been in Black cultural studies and racial history.
